Chapter Fourteen

MASON

It wasn’t a joke.

I stared at the crystal clear water filling two thirds of my tub and blinked several times thinking it was my imagination, but everything was still in place each time I opened my eyes. The delicate aroma of lavender, a scent I never used in any form normally, tickled my nose. Blake didn’t throw this together just because she’d made a promise, she’d actually put thought into it.

“I had Poseidon make sure to only give me shark free water. You’re safe to climb in.”

Blake smirked at me from the doorway and I rolled my eyes at her over my shoulder. She was a lot easier to handle when she was being a smartass or insulting me in some way. Hell, even her nickname for me—which wasn’t flattering in the least—managed to somehow be charming.

Shit. I was a goner. Somehow my stupid ass had managed to want more than just sex from Blake Alden. Although with the temptation of the steaming bath in front of me, sex was something that was definitely on the table.

But I couldn’t deny that whatever was happening between us had transcended from physical to something more before I’d even realized it. Blake had a little too perceptive of an insight into what drove me in my career just from one night. She listened and paid attention to everything I’d spouted off when debating merits of bills currently on the floor awaiting a vote.

I turned and caught her hand, exploring all the ways I could make her give the same little whimpering sigh she did before was a much safer expedition than navigating the tempestuous seas of emotion she created. “Just to be safe, it’s probably better to have a goddess in the waters with me, don’t you think?”

She captured her bottom lip between her teeth. “I should get back to the inn… our rooms are booking up faster and faster and it isn’t fair to leave all the work to my sisters.”

“First, responsibility is hot.” I hooked my index finger beneath her chin and lifted her face toward me, stepping out on a dangerous ledge as I spoke. “And I… I’d really like for you to spend time with me, but only if you want to.”

Blake groaned and dropped her head against my chest. “This was so much easier when I hated you.” She looked up at me and narrowed her eyes into a glare tinged with teasing. “Why do you have to be charming? I think I preferred you as a slimy asshole.”

I joined my hand with her and lifted it to kiss the inside of her wrist. “Sorry, you’ve basically taken my ego to an all-you-can-eat buffet and there isn’t a chance in hell I’m going to take that as anything but a compliment. And maybe a testimony of my skills.”

Blake’s digits skated beneath the hem of my shirt and, within seconds, she pulled it over my head. “Are you trying to blame me for the fact you’re a cocky bastard?”

Nuzzling into her neck, I hummed against her soft skin.
